Wolfgang Van Halen was lined up to perform at Back to the Beginning, the tribute concert honoring Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne. He had a role in mind for himself early in the planning stages, but in the end, timing conflicts made his participation impossible.
Originally, Wolfgang was scheduled to join one of the supergroups assembled for the event and play guitar on classic Sabbath or Ozzy tracks. The organizers had picked him for songs including Sweet Leaf and Changes at different points, as plans shifted. He had already booked travel and lodging, some of which came out of his own pocket, in anticipation of being part of the show.
However, Wolfgang’s commitments to his own band’s tour created a conflict. Mammoth, his group, was set to support Creed on a tour that started immediately after the tribute. Rehearsal overlaps and travel timing meant he couldn’t both show up for Back to the Beginning and be ready for the tour kick-off. Ultimately, the schedule made his involvement unworkable.
Even though Wolfgang missed this concert, he did get the chance to pay tribute to Ozzy in another high-profile setting: a performance at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2024 that honored Osbourne’s solo career. That moment allowed him to celebrate Ozzy’s legacy and reflect on his own family’s connections to rock history. He looked back on stories about his father’s early touring days beside Sabbath, using the chance to connect past and present in meaningful ways.
