In a surprising development, Mastodon has announced the departure of their co-founding guitarist and vocalist, Brent Hinds, after an impressive 25-year collaboration. The Atlanta-based metal band shared the news through their social media channels, stating, “After 25 monumental years together, Mastodon and Brent Hinds have mutually decided to part ways. We’re deeply proud of and beyond grateful for the music and history we’ve shared and we wish him nothing but success and happiness in his future endeavors.”
This marks the first significant lineup change for Mastodon since their formation in 2000. Hinds, alongside bassist/vocalist Troy Sanders, guitarist/vocalist Bill Kelliher, and drummer/vocalist Brann Dailor, has been instrumental in shaping the band’s distinctive sound over the years. Together, they released eight studio albums, starting with “Remission” in 2002 and most recently “Hushed and Grim” in 2021. Their innovative approach to metal has garnered critical acclaim and a dedicated fan base worldwide.
Despite Hinds’ departure, Mastodon reassured fans that their upcoming tour plans remain unaffected. They are scheduled to perform at Tool’s “Live in the Sand” festival in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, alongside acts like Primus, Coheed and Cambria, and Eagles of Death Metal. Following this, a U.S. co-headlining tour with Coheed and Cambria is set for May, featuring support from Periphery. The band emphasized their commitment to their supporters, stating, “We are still very inspired and excited to show up for fans in this next chapter of Mastodon. As we move forward, all 2025 touring plans will remain intact. We look forward to seeing you on the road.”
Brent Hinds has yet to release a personal statement regarding his departure. Beyond Mastodon, he has been involved in various musical projects, including Fiend Without a Face, West End Motel, Giraffe Tongue Orchestra, and Legend of the Seagullmen. His contributions to Mastodon have been pivotal, and his influence on the metal genre is undeniable. As fans bid farewell to this era, they remain eager to see what the future holds for both Mastodon and Brent Hinds.
