In a heartfelt revelation, Phil Collins, the iconic voice and drummer of Genesis, has opened up about his current health challenges and how they’ve affected his drive to create new music. Fans will recall Genesis’s final concert in 2022, where Collins performed with the aid of a cane, visibly showing signs of frail health.
Despite previous reports suggesting that Collins was back in the studio working on new material—the buzz sparked by producer Simon Napier-Bell sharing a photo with Collins and hinting at upcoming music—the reality seems more complex. In a candid interview with Mojo magazine, Collins admitted, “I keep thinking I should get down to the studio and see what happens. But I don’t really have the drive. The thing is, I’ve been sick, very sick.”
Collins’s health issues trace back to a spinal injury in 2007, leading to nerve damage that has progressively impacted his mobility and ability to perform. Reflecting on these challenges in the 2024 documentary …Drummer First, he shared, “If one day I wake up and can hold a pair of sticks, then I’ll have a chance. But I feel like I’ve used up my faculties. I’m still coming to terms with it… I’ve spent my entire life playing the drums. Suddenly not being able to do that is a shock.”
While the prospect of new music remains uncertain, Collins’s legacy continues to inspire fans worldwide.
