In an exciting blend of country and rock, Canada’s Chris Godwin Band has released a new track titled “GN’R Tee.” This song, which debuted last month, has been gaining momentum on platforms like SiriusXM’s Top of the Country channel and various Amazon Music country playlists.
The inspiration behind “GN’R Tee” comes from a personal story of lead singer Chris Godwin. He recalls owning a well-worn Guns N’ Roses T-shirt that he considered discarding. However, his girlfriend of 11 years had other plans; she claimed the shirt for herself and continues to wear it as a pajama top. This sentimental gesture led Godwin to write a song that deviates from his typical themes of drinking, partying, love, and relationships.
In an interview with the Prince George Citizen, Godwin shared, “Most of the songs that I write are typical country songs about drinking, partying, love, relationships, and my lovely girlfriend of 11 years one day said to me, ‘Why don’t you ever write a song about me?’ as kind of a joke – in jest.” He continued, “I said, ‘Uh-oh, pressure!’ And so I was laying in the backyard one day and I thought, ‘What am I actually going to write about?’ And I had an old Guns N’ Roses T-Shirt that was gettin’ kinda holey that I was going to throw out, and she actually wouldn’t let me and she kept it for herself and still wears it to this day as a pajama shirt. And that was the inspiration for the song.”
The influence of Guns N’ Roses doesn’t stop at the song’s title and lyrics. Godwin aimed to capture the essence of Slash’s iconic guitar solos in the track. He stated, “I wanted it to be inspired by something Slash would do from Guns N’ Roses. It had to be this big standout, run into it kind of solo.”
“GN’R Tee” beautifully narrates the story of a cherished T-shirt and the bond it symbolizes between Godwin and his girlfriend. The song’s lyrics paint a vivid picture of love, nostalgia, and the simple joys found in everyday moments.
