In 1998, Metallica paid tribute to southern rock legends Lynyrd Skynyrd by covering their 1973 classic “Tuesday’s Gone” for the album Garage Inc.. This rendition stands out not only for its heartfelt homage but also for its impressive lineup of guest musicians.
The recording session, part of San Jose radio station KSJO’s “Don’t Call Us, We’ll Call You” Christmas special in December 1997, featured:
- Jerry Cantrell (Alice In Chains)
- Sean Kinney (Alice In Chains)
- Jim Martin (Faith No More)
- Pepper Keenan (Corrosion of Conformity)
- Les Claypool (Primus)
- John Popper (Blues Traveler)
- Gary Rossington (Lynyrd Skynyrd)
This collaboration is the only track on Garage Inc. that credits musicians outside of Metallica.
In December 2011, during Metallica’s 30th anniversary celebrations, Rossington, Martin, Keenan, and Cantrell joined the band onstage to perform “Tuesday’s Gone” live, rekindling the magic of their earlier collaboration.
Lynyrd Skynyrd’s influence on Metallica is profound. Frontman James Hetfield has often cited them as a major inspiration, recalling “Sweet Home Alabama” as the first vinyl he ever purchased. He also regards “Free Bird” as one of his top songs, resonating with his early years on the road. Drummer Lars Ulrich has expressed admiration for deeper cuts like “On the Hunt” and “Saturday Night Special,” highlighting Skynyrd’s impact beyond their mainstream hits.
This collaboration not only honors Lynyrd Skynyrd’s legacy but also showcases the unity and mutual respect within the rock community.
