A historic building in downtown Los Angeles, famously featured on the cover of The Doors’ Morrison Hotel album, was severely damaged by fire on Thursday, December 26. Over 100 firefighters battled the flames at the site, located at 1246 S. Hope Street.
The Fire and Emergency Response
The fire broke out shortly before 11 a.m., prompting a massive response from 17 fire companies. Designated a “major emergency” by officials, the blaze took approximately 90 minutes to bring under control. The building, vacant for over 15 years, had been previously used as a firefighter training site, which helped crews navigate the structure efficiently.
While some occupants had evacuated before firefighters arrived, three individuals were rescued from inside. The building’s roof collapsed during the fire, leaving its structural integrity compromised.
A Historic Landmark
The building gained cultural significance after appearing on the cover of The Doors’ Morrison Hotel album, released in 1970. Photographed by Henry Diltz, the iconic cover shows the band posing behind a glass window with the words “Morrison Hotel” painted on it. The shoot reportedly took place without permission, with the band sneaking into position during a brief absence of the hotel clerk.
The album, The Doors’ fifth studio release, peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 and includes hits like “Roadhouse Blues” and “Peace Frog.” It remains a platinum-certified record and a testament to the band’s enduring legacy.
Future Plans for the Site
In 2023, the AIDS Healthcare Foundation acquired the building with plans to transform it into an affordable housing complex. The recent fire, however, has cast doubt on the feasibility of these plans due to the building’s extensive damage.
The fire’s aftermath underscores the need to preserve landmarks tied to cultural history while addressing modern housing challenges.
