Joey Belladonna, the renowned frontman of thrash metal band Anthrax, recently reflected on an unexpected chapter of his life following his departure from the group in 1992. In an interview with Music Interview Corner, Belladonna shared how he transitioned to an unusual but fulfilling job while quietly continuing his musical journey.
Adjusting to Life After Anthrax
When Belladonna was replaced by Armored Saint’s John Bush, the move caught him off guard. “It wasn’t my idea, and I wouldn’t have preferred it. But it happened,” he admitted. Despite the sudden change, he found a unique way to stay grounded: working in a horse barn alongside his wife, Krista.
“I worked in maintenance at a well-known riding facility,” he explained. “I spent my days cutting grass—it was such a big place, I could never finish all the work in a single day. It would take me two or three days just to weed the whole area.”
Although the work was far removed from his life as a musician, Belladonna found value in the experience. “A lot of people might be surprised I took that job. I didn’t really have to, but it came my way, and I enjoyed it. I gained a lot from it.”
Music Never Left His Life
Even while working at the barn, Belladonna remained connected to his passion. “I had a band and was playing drums, performing cover songs, and working on original music,” he said. “It felt like the old days for me. I kept busy and didn’t let myself fall apart.”
Eventually, his patience and perseverance paid off, and he rejoined Anthrax, resuming his role as their iconic frontman.
Anthrax Members Explore New Paths
Belladonna wasn’t the only Anthrax member to pursue a different career in the ’90s. Former guitarist Dan Spitz left the band in 1995 to become a master watchmaker. Today, Spitz runs a high-end horology restoration service in Florida and is highly respected for his craftsmanship.
Anthrax’s Next Chapter
Fans eagerly await Anthrax’s follow-up to their 2016 album, For All Kings. Belladonna recently shared an update, revealing he’s back in the studio working on vocal tracks for their upcoming release.
As Belladonna’s story shows, sometimes unexpected detours can lead to unexpected growth—even for rock legends.
