Director Ryan Coogler’s latest film, Sinners, draws significant inspiration from Metallica’s haunting track “One” from their 1988 album …And Justice for All. Coogler aimed to mirror the song’s progression—from intense beginnings to melodic interludes, culminating in a chaotic crescendo—in the film’s narrative structure. He described wanting the movie to feel like a song, using “One” as a template to guide its emotional and thematic journey.
The film stars Michael B. Jordan in dual roles as twins Smoke and Stack, who return to their Mississippi hometown to open a juke joint. Their venture faces opposition from the local white community but succeeds in uniting Black and Asian cultures. The plot takes a supernatural turn as they confront a group of vampires, blending social commentary with horror elements.
Adding to the Metallica connection, drummer Lars Ulrich contributed to the film’s score, further intertwining the band’s influence with the movie’s production.
