Weezer delivered a blazing performance at Coachella 2025 this weekend, despite a storm of controversy swirling around bassist Scott Shriner’s family. The band took the stage on April 12 for the first weekend of the festival, powering through a crowd-pleasing setlist that included classics like “Buddy Holly” and “Island in the Sun”, and even surprised fans with a bold cover of Metallica’s “Enter Sandman”.
But behind the music, things have been anything but calm.
Just four days before Coachella, Shriner’s wife, writer and podcast host Jillian Lauren, was involved in a dramatic and alarming incident in Los Angeles. According to law enforcement reports, police responded to a scene where Lauren allegedly pointed a firearm at officers during a separate police pursuit near her neighborhood. She was shot in the shoulder during the confrontation and eventually surrendered after retreating briefly into her home.
Lauren was later arrested and is facing charges including attempted murder of a peace officer. She has since been released on a $1 million bond and is scheduled to appear in court on April 30. Her attorney stated that she had recently undergone surgery related to cancer and may have been in a vulnerable state when the event unfolded.
Despite the gravity of the situation, Shriner took the stage with his bandmates, fully committed to the performance. The band chose not to address the incident during their set, instead letting the music speak for itself.
Fans at the Empire Polo Club didn’t seem phased by the off-stage news, and the crowd’s energy remained high throughout the set. Many praised the band’s professionalism and ability to deliver a stellar show under pressure.
Weezer won’t be returning for Coachella’s second weekend. Instead, Ed Sheeran will take their place in the Sunday lineup, which was recently announced as part of the updated schedule.
For Shriner, this may have been more than just a performance—it may have been a chance to keep the rhythm going while facing a deeply personal crisis behind the scenes.
