Trent Reznor, the iconic frontman of Nine Inch Nails, has always been synonymous with industrial rock. However, his musical tastes are far from one-dimensional. In a recent interview at the 2025 Golden Globe Awards with Los Angeles’ alternative rock station Alt 98.7, Reznor revealed that his favorite song of 2024 is Sabrina Carpenter’s pop sensation “Espresso.”
“I’m going to have to go with ‘Espresso’,” Reznor stated, leaving the interviewer pleasantly surprised. Released in April 2024 as the lead single from Carpenter’s sixth studio album, Short n’ Sweet, “Espresso” became a global phenomenon. By early December, it was the most-streamed song worldwide on Spotify, amassing over 1.6 billion streams. Its popularity was further amplified by viral trends on platforms like TikTok.
This isn’t the first time Reznor has expressed admiration for pop music. In June 2023, during an episode of the Tetragrammaton podcast, he confessed to tearing up while listening to Dua Lipa’s “Levitating,” a song his daughter introduced him to. He praised its craftsmanship, stating, “It was just a really well-done piece of music. It was clever. It felt good.”
Reznor’s openness to diverse musical genres highlights the universal appeal of well-crafted songs, regardless of their stylistic origins. His appreciation for “Espresso” underscores the song’s widespread acclaim and the evolving landscape of music consumption.
