Today marks 34 years since the passing of Steve Clark, the legendary guitarist of Def Leppard, who died on January 8, 1991, at the age of 30. Known affectionately as “The Riffmaster,” Clark’s innovative guitar work was instrumental in shaping the band’s signature sound during their rise to fame in the 1980s.
Born on April 23, 1960, Clark joined Def Leppard in 1978, a year after their formation. His contributions were pivotal on the band’s most successful albums, including 1983’s Pyromania and 1987’s Hysteria, both of which achieved RIAA diamond certification. These albums featured hits like “Photograph,” “Rock of Ages,” and “Pour Some Sugar on Me,” with Clark’s guitar riffs and solos becoming anthems for a generation of rock fans.
Clark’s partnership with fellow guitarist Phil Collen earned them the nickname “The Terror Twins,” renowned for their dynamic performances and off-stage camaraderie. Collen recalls their deep bond: “We quickly became best friends… We could get into deep conversations that would last for hours.”
Despite the band’s monumental success, Clark struggled with alcohol addiction. In 1989, he was hospitalized with alcohol poisoning, leading to a stint in rehab and a six-month leave of absence from Def Leppard. Tragically, on January 8, 1991, Clark passed away from an accidental overdose of alcohol and prescription drugs.
His death was a significant blow to the band, who had already faced challenges, including drummer Rick Allen’s car accident resulting in the loss of his arm. Clark’s legacy, however, endures through his music and the indelible mark he left on rock history.
In 2019, Clark was posthumously inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Def Leppard, a testament to his lasting impact on the genre. The band continues to honor his memory, sharing tributes on significant anniversaries and keeping his spirit alive in their performances.
As we remember Steve Clark today, let’s celebrate the music and talent he shared with the world. His riffs continue to inspire and resonate with fans old and new, ensuring that his legacy as a rock icon remains unforgotten.
“Remembering Steve Clark today. Happy birthday, you are missed dearly.”
