Swedish metal band Katatonia has announced the departure of co-founder, guitarist, and keyboardist Anders Nyström after a 34-year tenure. The news was shared by lead vocalist Jonas Renkse on the band’s social media channels.
In his statement, Renkse expressed that the decision was not made lightly but was necessary for both members to pursue their individual creative paths and manage personal schedules. He acknowledged Nyström’s significant influence on Katatonia’s distinctive sound since their formation in 1991. Renkse concluded by wishing Nyström the best for the future.
Nyström also addressed fans, stating that the paths he and Renkse have chosen have diverged, leading to the end of their long-term collaboration. He reflected on their journey, expressing gratitude for the experiences and memories shared over the years.
Katatonia, established in Stockholm in 1991 by Nyström and Renkse, began as a studio project focused on death metal. Over time, they evolved into a full band, releasing 12 studio albums, including their latest, “Sky Void of Stars,” in 2023. The band is scheduled to perform at various European festivals in July and August, followed by a headlining European tour from November through late December.
