On December 19, 2024, the legendary Kafe Antzokia in Bilbao came alive with the energy of Belako and the depth of Anari, two icons of the Basque music scene. Despite their generational and stylistic differences, they shared the stage in an unforgettable evening that bridged musical eras.
Anari, the singer-songwriter from Azkoitia, opened the night with her intimate and deeply emotional performance. Songs like “Epilogoa” and “Inmolazioa” from her album Giza zarata resonated profoundly with the audience, drawing comparisons to legendary figures such as PJ Harvey and Patti Smith. Her rendition of “Vesna Vulovic” was particularly moving, showcasing her ability to break genre boundaries and connect on a visceral level.
Belako followed, delivering a performance that highlighted their ever-evolving versatility. Kicking off with “Tie Me Up” and “White Lies,” the band displayed a more collaborative dynamic, with bassist Lore and guitarist Josu taking on prominent vocal roles. Josu’s solo on “Hegodun Baleak III” added a special touch to the concert. One of the most electrifying moments was “Sangre total,” during which vocalist Cris plunged into the crowd, igniting a wave of enthusiasm and lively mosh pits. The energy peaked with “Zaldi Baltza,” a classic that continues to be a show-stopper in their live sets.
The evening was a celebration of artistic connection, a testament to the vibrant and diverse music scene in the Basque Country. Belako and Anari proved that, whether through introspection or unbridled energy, their music can move people, each in their own unique way.
