Renowned guitarist Joe Satriani recently expressed his admiration for Kurt Cobain’s guitar skills, describing him as a “great guitar player.” In an interview with Classic Rock magazine, Satriani noted Cobain’s deep connection with his instrument, stating, “You go back and look at Nirvana clips, and you realize this guy is playing everything he’s supposed to play. He’s not looking at what he’s playing, so obviously he really knows the instrument.”
Satriani also highlighted the synergy between Cobain and drummer Dave Grohl, emphasizing that their collaboration wouldn’t have succeeded if Cobain lacked proficiency. Reflecting on the early ’90s grunge movement, Satriani admitted he was initially unaware of its impact on guitar solos, as he was immersed in creating his 1992 album, The Extremist, which he describes as a “love letter to the classic rock era.”
For fans eager to delve deeper into Satriani’s insights on grunge and his experiences with the G3 tour alongside guitarists Steve Vai and Eric Johnson, the latest issue of Classic Rock magazine offers an in-depth feature. Additionally, the trio’s live album, G3 Reunion Live, recorded during their 2024 U.S. tour, is set for release on January 31 via earMUSIC. This marks their first live album in over 25 years, available in various formats, including a 2CD set with a photo booklet and a 4LP gatefold edition.
Looking ahead, Satriani and Vai are slated to tour as the SatchVai Band for the “Surfing with the Hydra” tour this summer, with plans for a new studio collaboration following their 2024 release, “The Sea of Emotion, Pt. 1.” Fans can find more information and tour dates on their official website.
