In a recent conversation on The Lydian Spin podcast, Blythe shared his thoughts on encountering inebriated individuals at shows. He acknowledges the karmic twist, stating, “I terrified and annoyed countless people for decades.” This self-awareness stems from his own history of heavy drinking, which he openly admits was “pretty bad.”
Despite his sobriety, Blythe doesn’t judge those who choose to drink. He emphasizes that witnessing others indulge doesn’t tempt him; instead, it reinforces his commitment to staying sober. “It doesn’t make me wanna do it… It has the opposite effect,” he explains. Blythe is focused on “trying to do good things” with his life, such as writing and photography, pursuits he believes wouldn’t be possible if he were still drinking.
However, when faced with overly enthusiastic drunk fans invading his personal space, Blythe admits it can be bothersome. Yet, he handles these situations with grace, choosing to “just dip out” rather than react negatively. He understands that not everyone shares his struggles with alcohol and respects their choices, stating, “I can’t expect the rest of the world to behave in the way I do… Some people are perfectly okay, and that’s no problem.
