After more than four decades behind the drum kit for Iron Maiden, Nicko McBrain has decided to retire from touring. In a heartfelt conversation with Chaoszine, he shared the emotions and considerations that led to this significant decision.
Reflecting on his journey, McBrain revealed that the idea of retirement surfaced during the band’s 2023 North American tour. He had initially resolved to complete the entire tour before discussing his plans with his bandmates and management. He recounted, “I kind of made my mind up when we got to North America and talked to the boys about it, mainly Steve [Harris] and then the management. And everybody went, ‘Okay. If that’s what you wanna do, we understand,’ having my handicap, since my stroke and stuff like that.”
The rigorous schedule of “The Future Past” tour, which commenced in Europe in 2023, posed significant challenges for McBrain, especially following a stroke earlier that year that left him partially paralyzed. He admitted that while the routine helped maintain his readiness, the physical demands eventually took their toll. He lamented, “It was an easy decision, but I wish I could still play with the guys. I wish I had my full fitness.”
Despite working diligently with a personal trainer to regain his strength and coordination, McBrain felt he could no longer deliver the performance levels he was accustomed to. He expressed frustration over not being able to execute certain drumming techniques, stating, “The feeling I had was I was frustrated because I know I could do stuff, but I couldn’t actually do it physically or mentally because there’s a lot of mental stuff going on.”
As he steps back from touring, McBrain remains active in the music scene. He continues to play drums with his band, Titanium Tart, and makes appearances at his Rock n Roll Ribs BBQ restaurant. Additionally, fans might have a memoir to look forward to, as discussions about a potential book are underway. McBrain hinted, “Yeah, we’re on the cusp of that. Yeah, it’s been talked about.”
While his departure from the touring circuit marks the end of an era, Nicko McBrain’s legacy with Iron Maiden remains indelible. His contributions have left an enduring mark on the band’s history and the broader rock genre.
